After violent clashes broke out between two groups of followers—one supporting Maulana Jubayer and the other backing Maulana Saad Kandhalvi—over the control of the Tongi Ijtema grounds in Gazipur, police have imposed an indefinite ban on all public gatherings along the Turag River in Dhaka.
On Wednesday, December 18, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali announced the decision through a public notice.
According to the notice, any kind of public gatherings, including meetings, rallies, processions, protests, or demonstrations, are now prohibited in areas like Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector 10, and parts of the southern and western banks of the Turag River in Dhaka.
This restriction will remain in effect until further notice.
DMP Deputy Commissioner for Media and Public Relations, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, explained to Prothom Alo that the ban was put in place starting at 2:00 PM today.
It was enacted under the powers of Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance of 1976 to maintain public order amid the current situation.
The clashes between supporters of Maulana Jubayer and Maulana Saad over the control of the Ijtema grounds have already led to the deaths of two people, according to police reports.
